Testimnial:
I think I've found my new favourite Food Hall!
No mean feat, having visited at least 30 across Europe this year alone, but following a recent trip to Vienna as part of a Coverpoint Foodservice Consulting research visit, I had the opportunity to visit Gleis//Garten located in Meidling, a short taxi journey from the city centre. And it is so worth the trip.
Opened in October 2023, the 1,900m² venue has transformed the former tram depot into a truly mixed use space, combining food, inhouse craft brewery, bars, entertainment and community engagement, all under one magnificent wooden roof. The space itself is what sets this Food Hall apart from others - an oasis of greenery, palm trees, olive trees and natural material finishes, which give a warmth and 'life' and airiness to the venue. I loved the nod to the building's former glory, with the tram lines still visible along the floor, in stark contrast to the shine and glint of the modern, vast stainless steel beer vats.
The food offer is spread amongst 9 tenants (with a rotating local hero kiosk), and features Moroccan, BBQ (I opted for the double smash burger), Pizza, Thai and Vegan/ Vegetarian amongst the provision. The focal point however, is the open plan craft beer brewery by Vienna Kraft - visually stunning (and a broad selection of great beer)!
The venue houses various stages for events such as movie night, Latin dance classes (no, I didn't) and a full programme of activities throughout the week which brings the added atmosphere to the space. In the warmer months, a large external garden increases capacity.
Everything just seemed to seamlessly 'fit' - there was a great energy and vibe to the experience which is so hard to achieve (but I'm guessing the Caipirinha may have also helped)! If you find yourself in the city, I'd highly recommend a visit.
